Best Person for the Job: Ashley Taylor

In 2008, it became apparent that a childhood dream of becoming a dental hygienist wasn’t what Ashley Taylor hoped it would be. When an opportunity opened up in construction, she seized it. Starting as a receptionist and service manager for a life safety subcontractor, she quickly moved into construction accounting and collections. Since then, the Charlotte, North Carolina native has spent most of her career in construction as a project accountant and credit analyst.

By 2019, while working for a commercial general contractor, Ashley was ready for a new challenge. She wanted to move into project management, but her employer at the time wouldn’t allow women in the field. Ashley made a difficult decision to move on. Today, she is loving her job as Assistant Project Manager for WeaverCooke Construction in Greensboro, NC, which specializes in multi-family housing, affordable housing, and senior living construction.

Ashley credits NAWIC for providing opportunities for education and support, including three NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF) certifications: Construction Industry Technician (CIT), Construction Industry Specialist (CIS), and Construction Drawings Professional (CDP). She plans to complete her Construction Bookkeeping Technician (CBT) certification in August at the NAWIC Annual Conference in Portland, OR and her Construction Documents Technician (CDT) & Estimating and Scheduling Practitioner (ESP) certifications in 2024.

In the short time since joining NAWIC’s Charlotte, NC chapter in 2019, Ashley has served in many roles at both the Chapter and Regional levels, including Director, Corresponding Secretary, Vice President, and President, as well as filling in for other roles when needed. Regionally, she co-chaired Block Kids and currently chairs the Chapter Development Committee for the South Atlantic Region.

In 2021, Ashley was named Future Leader of the Year for the NAWIC Charlotte Chapter. Since then, she has earned her Red Recruiter Jacket for recruiting 18 new members within a 3-year period and was recognized as a Top Recruiter. For her recruiting efforts and NAWIC involvement, she received the 2022 Founders Award at the NAWIC Annual Conference in Minneapolis and was named the 2023 NAWIC Member of the Year for the Charlotte Chapter.

“I am surrounded by a TRIBE of women in the industry who have each other’s back,” she says. “Championing the Success of Women in the Construction Industry is where I truly feel at home. Shattering the Glass Ceiling and Breaking the Bias for all women in the Construction Industry is my current presidential theme.”
